How To Apply For MEXT Scholarships for USA Citizens

MEXT Scholarship 2022-2023 is a fully funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is available for undergraduate, masters, PhD and training studies. MEXT scholarship will cover tuition fee, accommodation, monthly living allowance and round airfare travel expenses from your country to Japan.

MEXT Scholarships are the most prestigious scholarships sponsored by Japan’s Department of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology and are granted by the Japanese government. This Scholarship was developed to assist students who are interested in studying in Japan and to alleviate the financial strain.

Types of MEXT Scholarships

There are four different categories of MEXT Scholarships available to US citizens. It doesn’t matter if you’re a graduate or an undergraduate because the MEXT Scholarship is open to students of all ages.

If you satisfy the eligibility conditions of a certain group and want to apply, don’t stop there! Scroll down to learn more about how to apply for your scholarship.

Benefits of All MEXT Scholarships:

  1. Covers Full Tuition for the Duration of Your Scholarship
  2. Travelling Fees (Roundtrip)
  3. Monthly Living Stipend for Room & Board
  4. Provides Unique Opportunities to Travel and Have Fun!

These benefits apply to all four types of MEXT Scholarships, so please apply if you are eligible and the scholarship deadline is open! Some scholarships might differ in values, but these are the basic amounts that you will receive as a MEXT Scholar.

1. MEXT Scholarship for Undergraduate Students

This MEXT Scholarship is for high school seniors who are about to graduate, as the name implies. Though you can acquire your high school graduation before travelling as a MEXT Scholar, you can still apply for this undergraduate scholarship even if you have not yet graduated from high school.

 Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Be at least the Age of 17 and Under 22
  2. Completed 12 Years of Education OR Completed High School

For students who are under 22, don’t worry; however, for students between 22 ~ 25, please double-check the MEXT eligibility requirements to make sure. As a homeschool student, you can still apply if you have finished high school level courses.

2. MEXT Specialized Traning College Student Scholarship

This MEXT Scholarship is comparable to the MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship, although there is a slight difference. You will, however, most likely need to be familiar with Japanese educational structures in order to meet the requirements.

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for this opportunity:

  • You must be at least 17 years old and under the age of 22 to participate.
  • 12 years of schooling OR a Japanese high school diploma

Instead of graduating from high school, the prospective student must complete a high school curriculum equivalent to that of a Japanese high school to be eligible for this scholarship. To meet this criteria, the candidate must be familiar with the courses required for graduation from a Japanese high school.

If you do not have the educational information regarding Japanese High Schools, please email the MEXT Scholarship Department for more information. However, if you don’t know it now as a high school senior, you probably can’t fulfill all educational requirements in a few months. Never hurts to ask!

3. MEXT Scholarship for Japanese Studies

This MEXT Scholarship is for students who are currently in college who desire to study Japanese language and/or culture. If you want to apply for MEXT Japanese Studies Scholarships, you must meet certain prerequisites.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 30.
  • Currently in an undergraduate programme outside of Japan
  • If you want to major in Japanese language or culture, here is the place to go.

Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in an institution prior to being considered for a MEXT Scholarship. The scholarship winner must also return to his native undergraduate college after completing the MEXT Scholarship.

For students who want to major in other subjects other than Japanese Language or Japanese Culture, they can apply for a student exchange program called JASSO.

4. MEXT Student Research Scholarship

Following the distribution of scholarships to prospective and existing students, the MEXT Scholarship Program is now awarding scholarships to students interested in graduate study. A similar situation exists for potential graduate students as well as high school pupils, which I shall address below the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be under the age of 35.
  • Be a college graduate or have completed 16 years of education

Even though you might be a senior in college, you can still apply for this scholarship as long as you receive your undergraduate degree before departing as a MEXT Scholar.
